Zurich - FIFA, football's world governing body, has announced that Russia has succeeded in its bid to host the 2018 World Cup, while Qatar will be staging the event in 2022.
The results were announced by FIFA's president, Sepp Blatter, in Zurich following a secret ballot of FIFA members.
England, the Netherlands/Belgium, Russia and Spain/Portugal were all vying to host the 2018 tournament, while Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and the US bid for 2022.
It is the first time that either Russia or Qatar have been selected as host nation for the World Cup.
