Tata to give ailing Nano a jump-start

When Ratan Tata unveiled the Nano in 2008, the chairman of Tata Group said that the world's cheapest car would take market share in the low-end car market and from the high-end motorcycle segment when it hit the roads.

Three years on, and the reality could not be further away. The latest sales data released by Tata Motors this week showed that dealers across India sold only 509 Nanos in October, 85 per cent down on a year ago.

The poor sales figures of the Nano -- which sells for about Rs100,000 ($2,500) -- are in stark contrast to the record sales made by other carmakers in India, including Tata Motors itself, which has seen overall sales grow more than 31
